Syntax Data Delivers New Kind Of Stock Analysis

Curt Meyer, Managing Director of Sales and Marketing for Syntax, joined Keith Black, Managing Director of RIA Channel, to discuss Syntax’s differentiated approach to evaluating stocks and ETFs as well as the launch of its proprietary financial analysis tool, Affinity®.

Syntax is a financial technology and data company that looks beyond traditional stock classifications and weighting methodologies. Rooted in a biotech background, Syntax’s scientific perspective aims to uncover each company’s ‘DNA’ in a precise and granular way to help advisors diversify and understand portfolio risk more effectively.

While many investors and analysts are familiar with GICS classifications, which sort companies into ten sectors and 139 sub-industries, Syntax classifies companies based on a new language they call Functional Information Systems (FIS).  The system analyzes the financials reported by public companies and sorts them into every product and revenue stream reported by a company.  Syntax maps 11,000 companies and 1,600 unique business groupings and categorizes the products in ways that can be searched by strategists.

There are a number of use cases for Syntax data.  Queries can be used to build thematic indices for ETFs and SMAs.  Syntax’s Affinity®Platform includes an ETF analyzer that maps 1,300 ETFs into specific sectors and holdings, while also allowing investors to screen universes and analyze individual companies.
