State Street Investment Management’s Allison Bonds Mazza On Democratizing Alternative Investments

Allison Bonds Mazza, Senior Managing Director and Head of US Wealth for State Street Investment Management, joined Julie Cooling, Founder and CEO of RIA Channel, to discuss the democratization of alternative investments by offering investors access to Bridgewater’s All Weather strategy in an ETF format.

State Street has a long history of innovation and democratizing investing, including the launch of the first ETF 33 years ago, the SPDR(R) S&P 500(R) ETF Trust (SPY).  Today, State Street is focused on democratizing alternative investments. State Street partnered with Bridgewater Associates to launch the SPDR(R) Bridgewater(R) All Weather ETF(R) (ALLW) in March 2025.

ALLW is an actively managed, diversified, global, multi-asset-class solution designed to deliver consistent performance across all market environments.  Environments modeled include rising and slowing economic growth, as well as increasing or declining inflation. While Bridgewater has been managing the All Weather strategy for almost three decades, it was historically available only to institutions and ultra-high-net-worth investors. The popularity of the strategy is demonstrated by over $650 million in asset inflows in the ETF’s first eight months.

The ETF’s asset allocation is aligned with how investors are designing portfolios today, which may be 60/30/10, with 60% in equities, 30% in fixed income, and 10% in alternative investments. It has been challenging for average investors to access alternative investments due to high minimum investment requirements, complex subscription documentation, and limited liquidity.

Investors today are uncomfortably bullish, generally holding long equity portfolios while becoming increasingly concerned about market uncertainty. If the market’s next fifteen years don’t look like the last fifteen years, investors should consider building portfolios with greater resilience.
