Mario Valente, Deputy Chief Investment Officer for Stansberry Asset Management, joined Julie Cooling, Founder and CEO of RIA Channel, to discuss the firm’s focus on idiosyncratic and low-volatility investment opportunities.
Stansberry Asset Management was founded nine years ago, primarily to serve high-net-worth individuals and nonprofit institutions. The firm manages $1.1 billion in separately managed accounts (SMAs) for its clients. Portfolios are offered for clients with aggressive, moderate, or defensive risk tolerance.
Stansberry is both an asset manager and a registered investment advisor. In addition to managing assets for clients, the firm sells its asset management services to other RIAs through Advyzon’s turnkey asset management platform (TAMP). The portfolios developed by Stansberry select individual stocks and bonds with the goal of earning returns that have low volatility and low correlation to other investment products. This means that passive ETF and mutual fund products are not purchased in client portfolios. The process involves searching for idiosyncratic returns, such as those that can be earned through merger arbitrage, special situations, and convertible bonds.
