Schwab’s Sonders Talks Economic Recovery & State Of The Markets

At Schwab’s IMPACT 2020, Liz Ann Sonders, Chief Investment Strategist, Charles Schwab and Will Page, Author and Economist discuss current economic trends and the state of the market. As we inch closer to the 2020 U.S. elections, COVID-19 cases are once again on the rise and additional fiscal relief seems increasingly unlikely. Sonders weighs in on the recent market correction and what the path to recovery might look like going forward. Page, former economist for Spotify and Sonders both acknowledge the challenges and complexities of measuring true economic recovery in this environment. While certain sectors like manufacturing and work from home stocks continue to flourish, leisure industries remain in a slump. Many investors are also banking on the successful roll out of the COVID-19 vaccine to recharge the economy. Sonders says that the vaccine could likely have a strong positive effect on markets and the economy, but that we are many steps away from knowing the vaccines true impact. Speaking to the “K” shaped recovery model, Sonders suggests that the widening income gap and recovery, has certainly been exasperated by the virus. She also attributes a lot of the current volatility in the market to human emotion and the “attention economy.” Sonders and Page encourage investors to be patient and aim see the forest for the trees.
