Morningstar’s Joe Agostinelli On Navigating Investment Complexity and the Emotional Side of Financial Advice

Joe Agostinelli, Senior Director of Market Research for Morningstar, joined Zoe Hunt, Host of RIA Channel, at the 2026 Morningstar Investment Conference to discuss Morningstar’s latest investor research and the opportunities for advisors to add value in an increasingly complex investment landscape.

Agostinelli explains that Morningstar’s Investor Perspectives Program provides an in-depth look at the investor landscape by surveying retail investors, advisors, asset managers, and asset owners across multiple regions. As markets become increasingly complex, especially with the emergence of AI, he notes that about 41% of investors say they are not confident they can distinguish accurate information from misinformation. Agostinelli believes advisors have an opportunity to help clients filter through the noise, provide context, and keep them focused on their long-term investment goals.

Beyond investment management, Agostinelli highlights the importance of the emotional side of financial advice. Morningstar’s research found that many retail investors currently feel nervous or uncertain about the markets, though that figure declines among those working with a financial advisor. He explains that advisors who can proactively prepare clients for market volatility and maintain ongoing conversations can help build confidence and provide greater peace of mind.

Agostinelli also sees a growing opportunity in private markets. While only about one-third of advisors currently offer private market investments and just 24% of retail investors say they understand key considerations such as fees and liquidity, he believes advisors who educate themselves and their clients will be well positioned to incorporate private investments where appropriate.
