Moran Wealth’s Shaw and BNY Pershing’s Townsend and On Growth Strategies and Talent Development

Christina Townsend, Head of Client Executives for BNY Pershing, and Christina Shaw, Chief Data Officer for Moran Wealth Management, joined Julie Cooling, Founder and CEO of RIA Channel, to discuss how to attract talent that will facilitate each firm’s growth while maintaining the culture.

Rather than outsourcing, Moran Wealth Management continues to build its in-house investment capabilities, providing institutional-quality portfolios to sophisticated investors. Shaw notes that culture and talent are the foundations for growth, as the firm seeks to cultivate a culture of curiosity and entrepreneurial thinking. Exceptional outcomes can come from empowering team members to make decisions. Moran invests in supporting the personal development of its team members. New hires should bring a fresh perspective, possess data fluency, and have a passion for modernizing wealth management. Moran sponsors the Bloomberg lab at Florida Gulf Coast University, where the firm has hired employees and interns.

Townsend states that the firms that will thrive tomorrow are rethinking their talent strategy today. Although BNY has been around for 240 years, the firm must continue to reinforce its culture and value proposition. Today’s talent needs to understand artificial intelligence but also be well-versed in the field enough to recognize when AI is not providing the right answers. BNY has a robust analyst and internship program focused on the next generation of talent, including 1,500 students for summer 2025. Over 75% of the 2024 interns were hired full-time after graduation. Hundreds of students attend BNY INSITE each year.
