Janus Henderson’s Michael Contopoulos On The Demand For Model Portfolios

Michael Contopoulos, Head of Multi-Asset Macro Investing for Janus Henderson Investors and former Deputy CIO of Richard Bernstein Advisors (RBA), joined Zoe Hunt, Host of RIA Channel, to discuss the firm’s recent acquisition of RBA and the increasing demand for model portfolios.

Contopoulos explains that RBA is known for its macro, top-down analysis and portfolio solutions, while Janus Henderson is recognized for its bottom-up investment approach and active ETF products. By bringing RBA under Janus Henderson, Contopoulos says the firm is well positioned to meet growing advisor demand for model portfolios that combine both top-down and bottom-up perspectives.

This demand for model portfolios comes as Contopoulos notes that advisors are increasingly moving away from stock picking as they focus more on financial planning and client relationships. As a result, many are turning to investment professionals to manage day-to-day portfolio decisions, which model portfolios can support. He explains that models help advisors spend less time monitoring markets and more time building wealth plans, growing assets, and preparing clients for retirement. Contopoulos points to Janus Henderson’s asset allocation, balanced all equity, and all fixed-income models as examples.

Looking ahead, Contopoulos says Janus Henderson plans to expand its model portfolio offerings through late 2026 and into 2027. The firm expects to grow its international offerings while developing more specialized solutions focused on areas such as income and multi-asset investing. Contopoulos also highlights the firm’s solutions team, which works with advisors to create customized portfolio solutions tailored to each client’s needs.
