Nick Nefouse, CFA, Global Head of Retirement Solutions and Head of LifePath, Multi-Asset Strategies and Solutions for BlackRock, joined Julie Cooling, Founder and CEO of RIA Channel, to discuss BlackRock’s LifePath strategy and the evolution of retirement solutions.
As most Americans have their retirement driven by a 401(k) or a similar plan, Nefouse highlights the importance of focusing on outcomes rather than account balances. He explains that retirement planning is no longer just about wealth accumulation, but also about helping investors spend throughout retirement.
Nefouse points to personalized pension plans, which can incorporate components of traditional defined benefit plans, including guaranteed income and private markets, into target-date funds. By providing access to insurance and private markets, he explains that these solutions can still help investors accumulate wealth while creating greater certainty in retirement.
Nefouse also highlights the important role of alternatives, including liquid alternatives, insurance, and private markets, as the industry moves toward more holistic retirement portfolios. He notes that BlackRock’s LifePath Paycheck strategy already incorporates insurance products. He adds that while private markets remain in the early stages for retirement solutions, BlackRock is showing investors how adding private markets can help improve retirement outcomes.
Since LifePath is a target-date fund that provides multi-asset portfolios, Nefouse highlights how BlackRock can help take the guesswork out of investing. He explains that BlackRock manages asset allocation, diversification, and rebalancing while reducing risk as investors approach retirement. BlackRock also offers LifePath ETFs for use across retirement accounts.
