Allspring’s Mike Guirguis On The Evolution Of Tax-Managed Investing

Mike Guirguis, Head of Enterprise RIA for Allspring Global Investments, joined Julie Cooling, Founder and CEO of RIA Channel, to discuss how technology and advisor education are expanding access to tax management strategies.

Guirguis explains that tax management, once largely reserved for high-net-worth investors, has become increasingly scalable and accessible due to advances in technology. He highlights three broad categories advisors are increasingly implementing with their wider client bases: tax-loss harvesting, options and options overlay strategies, and long-short strategies and exchange funds. He explains that technology has helped automate historically manual tax-loss harvesting, fueling the growth of direct indexing. Meanwhile, options strategies can help advisors hedge concentrated stock positions without immediately realizing gains, while long-short strategies and exchange funds have become easier to access and implement.

Guirguis also highlights how Allspring supports advisors through its Remi platform, which provides custom manager-traded SMAs across fixed income and equities, direct indexing, and systematic tax loss harvesting across both asset classes. Guirguis adds that advisor education remains critical. While technology has expanded product accessibility, improved education around concepts such as tax alpha has helped drive broader adoption and usage by advisors.
