Inflation has become a large concern for investors after appearing to be unimportant during the 2010’s. Following the sharp rise in inflation during 2021, policy experts insisted that this was just “transitory”, which turned out to be categorically wrong. Both stocks and bonds declined at the same time during 2022 and then reversed this trend during the first half of 2023. Is the inflation issue resolved, or do allocators need to reconsider asset allocation for the coming decade? Commodities have historically performed well during inflationary episodes, and we will review both the long-term history and recent market performance of traditional assets and inflation, highlighting the important role commodities can provide to diversified investment portfolios.
