“Over the last 50 years, we realized that looking for growth at any cost, actually costs us a lot,” says Loehwing. Pressures such as global population growth, climate change and resource constraints, increased government regulation around emissions, and changing social factors, like increased emphasis on equality, coupled with disruptive technology have acted as a catalyst for the transition. As the economy continues to change and evolve, some companies will be exposed to risk, while others will be key drivers of growth. “We are looking to invest in disruptive companies and durable business models that want to be part of the solution,” says Loehwing.
One of the major themes highlighted by Impax in 2022 is Biodiversity. “Animals and plants are being lost up to 10,000 times the rate of natural extinction”, explains Loehwing. From an investment perspective, biodiversity and nature is estimated to generate trillions of dollars in economic value and is central to producing food crops, job creation, natural protection from natural disasters and is very closely tied to climate change.
