The Gartman Letter

Mr. Gartman has been directly involved in the capital markets since August of 1974, after his graduate work at the North Carolina State University. He was an economist for Cotton, Inc. in the early 1970’s, analyzing cotton supply/demand in the US textile industry. From there he went to NCNB National Bank in Charlotte, North Carolina where he traded foreign exchange and money market instruments. In the late 70’s, Mr. Gartman became the Chief Financial Futures analyst for A.G. Becker & Company in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Gartman was an independent member of the Chicago Board of Trade until 1984, trading in treasury bond, treasury note and GNMA futures contracts. In 1984, Mr. Gartman moved to Virginia to run the futures brokerage operation for the Sovran Bank, and in 1987 Mr. Gartman began producing The Gartman Letter on a full time basis. He continues to do so today.

The Gartman Letter is a daily commentary on the global capital markets, distributed to subscribers by 6:00 am EST (11:00 GMT) each business day. The Letter addresses political, economic, and technical trends from both long-term and short-term perspectives. Clients of The Gartman Letter, L.C. include many of the leading banks, broking firms, mutual funds, hedge funds, energy trading companies, and grain trading companies. Mr. Gartman has lectured on capital market creation to central banks and finance ministries around the world, and has taught classes for the Federal Reserve Bank’s School for Bank Examiners on derivatives. Mr. Gartman served a two-year term as an outside Director of the Kansas City Board of Trade from 2006-2008. He has been a member of the Suffolk Industrial Development Authority. He now serves on the Investment Committee of both the University of Akron and the North Carolina State University. Mr. Gartman appears often on financial news outlets including Fox Business, Bloomberg, and BNN discussing commodities and the capital markets, and speaks before various associations and trade groups around the world.

Michael Cohen

Michael Cohen is a Director and Head of Commodities Research at Barclays. Based in New York, Mr. Cohen is responsible for the firm’s global research covering upstream, midstream, and downstream energy market developments. He is the lead author of Barclays’ flagship oil market monthly publication, The Blue Drum, and he also advises top management of Barclays’ broad-reaching client base on global energy market developments.

Prior to joining Barclays Capital in August 2013, Mr. Cohen spent two years as a senior member of the Oil Industries and Markets Division at the International Energy Agency (IEA), where he was a principal author of the industry benchmark Oil Market Report and Medium Term Oil Market Report. Mr. Cohen also worked for seven years with the US Department of Energy as an economist with the Energy Information Administration and with the Office of Policy and International Affairs. He also has experience as a trading desk analyst for AEP and as an electricity market design consultant.

Mr. Cohen received an MA in International Economics from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and a dual degree in Business Economics and Political Science from The Ohio State University. He is a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and is a guest lecturer on energy and geopolitics at the US National Intelligence Council, Stanford, Georgetown, and Johns Hopkins University.

Steven A. Cook

Steven A. Cook is Eni Enrico Mattei senior fellow for Middle East and Africa studies at the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR). He is an expert on Arab and Turkish politics as well as U.S.-Middle East policy. Cook is the author of False Dawn: Protest, Democracy, and Violence in the New Middle East; The Struggle for Egypt: From Nasser to Tahrir Square, which won the Washington Institute for Near East Policy’s gold medal in 2012; and Ruling But Not Governing: The Military and Political Development in Egypt, Algeria, and Turkey.

Cook is a columnist at Foreign Policy magazine. He has also published widely in international affairs journals, opinion magazines, and newspapers, and he is a frequent commentator on radio and television. His work can be found on his blog, From the Potomac to the Euphrates.

Prior to joining CFR, Cook was a research fellow at the Brookings Institution (2001–2002) and a Soref research fellow at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy (1995–1996).

Cook holds a BA in international studies from Vassar College, an MA in international relations from Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and both an MA and a PhD in political science from the University of Pennsylvania. He speaks Arabic and Turkish and reads French.

Eugene Gaysinskiy

Eugene Gaysinskiy is a Director in the Cross Asset Structuring team at Barclays, based in New York. He is responsible for the development of commodity quantitative investment strategies, across the beta, smart beta and risk premium categories. As part of this role, Eugene works closely with clients to identify and create investments that are tailored to their portfolio. Eugene joined Barclays in 2008.

Eugene holds a Bachelor of Science in Information Systems with an additional major in Statistics from Carnegie Mellon University.
