Philip Straehl, Chief Investment Officer of Americas, Morningstar Wealth, joined Zoe Hunt, Host of RIA Channel, at the 2026 Morningstar Investment Conference to discuss inflation and the evolving impact of AI, from market concentration to portfolio diversification and income opportunities.
Straehl notes that about 10 stocks have contributed approximately 50% to 60% of global equity market returns so far this year, with a heavy concentration among semiconductor and memory stocks. He highlights that Morningstar Wealth is positioned for a potential broadening of markets.
With inflation pressures shifting the Fed’s approach, Straehl emphasizes diversification, particularly through global fixed income and alternative investments. He also highlights the importance of income, especially for investors in retirement. He still sees high-quality sources of yield available, including opportunities in REITs, but encourages investors to look outside of market-cap-weighted indexes.
Looking ahead, Straehl expects the focus on AI to expand beyond infrastructure and toward the second-order impacts of AI. This includes companies that can use AI to improve productivity and cut costs. He highlights the software, software-adjacent, and financial services industries.
