RBC’s Phil Langham On Emerging Markets: Opportunities And The AI Concentration

Phil Langham, Head of Emerging Market Equities for RBC Global Asset Management, joined Alissa Howard, Institutional Portfolio Manager for RBC Global Asset Management, to discuss the factors driving emerging market performance and concentration.

Langham highlights that emerging markets have historically offered broad diversification across countries, sectors, and stocks, but recent performance has become increasingly concentrated. Taiwan and Korea now account for more than 50% of the benchmark, driven largely by leading semiconductor companies benefiting from AI-related investments. While Langham notes that AI’s long-term growth potential looks attractive, he also points to competition, monetization, and rising debt-funded capital expenditures as reasons for near-term caution.

Beyond AI, Langham sees opportunities in financials and consumer stocks, as well as Latin America, where stronger commodity prices and an improving political environment could provide support. Langham also remains positive on India over the long term, citing its strong growth prospects, high-quality companies, experienced management teams, and attractive franchises.
