PIMCO’s Devin Ekberg On What Sets Top Financial Advisors Apart

Devin Ekberg, Senior Consultant for PIMCO Advisor Education, joined Zoe Hunt, Host of RIA Channel, to discuss how advisors can differentiate themselves in a competitive landscape.

Ekberg explains that client expectations have evolved significantly over the past two decades. While advisors were once primarily expected to provide investment access and later comprehensive financial planning, some of today’s most successful advisors help clients connect their wealth with their values and principles.

Ekberg highlights that industry-leading advisors are specializing. He identifies business owners and corporate executives as two client segments that often need professional advice but may receive limited support. He explains that business owners often require guidance on retirement planning, asset protection, and tax management, while corporate executives frequently need specialized advice to navigate complex compensation packages, including restricted stock and incentive stock options. He finds that those who develop a high level of competency and advanced expertise in these areas are positioned to differentiate themselves.

Ekberg also emphasizes the importance of storytelling, encouraging advisors to clearly communicate their value and share relatable client experiences. He encourages advisors to stay educated. He explains that as assets get more complex, advisors benefit from higher education, advanced certification programs, and professional networks. Looking ahead, he notes that PIMCO Advisor Education remains focused on delivering key research, resources, and insights to help advisors enhance their practices.
